Investing money in your HOME is a big event. However, if you know what to expect from each step of the home buying process, you may find it easier or even satisfying.
I’ve broken down the home buying process into 15 main points: Call it a buying-a-house checklist. Each step includes options to consider and things to do. Some are stressful, some are really exciting and some may be even irritating. But each gets you one step closer to your goal of homeownership.
- check your credit score;
- decide about your budget and perfectly: be a little flexible about it;
- think about your needs and wants;
- shop multiple lenders;
- get pre-approved;
- research about downpayment assistance if needed;
- Look for a local REALTOR (your partner in real estate journey, as you need someone you can trust; your eyes and your ears when shopping for a home);
- tour the properties you like (with your realtor);
- make an offer;
- get homeowner’s insurance;
- schedule a property inspection;
- have a property appraised;
- negotiate any repairs or credit with a seller (again here is your realtor to help);
- close on your home;
- celebrate it;
Home buying process may take as little as 15 days, and up to 8 months. Local economy, market conditions and your financial situation are key factors affecting the timeline.
